Slave. Christian. Brother in Christ. Onesimus stole from his master and ran away, then had an encounter with the imprisoned Paul…and found Jesus. This is Paul’s plea to Philemon, the slave’s master, to give freedom to his new brother in Christ. Written from prison, Paul writes of freedom, knowing that while he is a prisoner of Rome, his true situation is that he is Captivated by Christ.

Is it odd to consider that we can be filled with Joy in the midst of a struggle? That we can find Peace in the middle of turmoil? Though Jesus was perfect, the circumstances of his life were not. We discover He was both a man of sorrows, and also a man of Joy. Is it possible for us to share in that Joy in the middle of our current circumstances?
