Slave. Christian. Brother in Christ. Onesimus stole from his master and ran away, then had an encounter with the imprisoned Paul…and found Jesus. This is Paul’s plea to Philemon, the slave’s master, to give freedom to his new brother in Christ. Written from prison, Paul writes of freedom, knowing that while he is a prisoner of Rome, his true situation is that he is Captivated by Christ.

Peter knows that his time in the world won't be much longer, so he is taking the opportunity to give some important reminders to his readers. He stresses that even though he was an eye witness the glory of God, that he went on the mountaintop with Jesus and saw his transfiguration, and he saw Moses and Elijah, and heard the audible voice of God, that even then, of even greater worth than his personal experience is the word of God, the scriptures. For our experiences fade, but the Word of God endures, and we can count on it time and time and time again.
